We All Turned Back

Saturday morning, and the sky was blue.
Everybody said:  “Let’s go to the zoo!”
We packed our lunches and went out to the car –
But Mom forgot the keys, so we didn’t get far.

And we all turned back, we all turned back.
We searched in every nook and in every crack.
We all turned back, we all turned back.
Mom forgot the keys, so we all turned back.

We found Mom’s keys and drove to the zoo,
To see the lions and tigers and kangaroos.
We all were excited when we got to the gate –
But Dad forgot his wallet, so we’d have to wait.

And we all turned back, we all turned back.
We searched in every nook and in every crack.
We all turned back, we all turned back.
Dad forgot his wallet, so we all turned back.

We found Dad’s wallet and went out again.
We grabbed our stuff and climbed in the van.
After a while Mom said: “Where’s Baby Ben?”
And suddenly it hit us:  he was nowhere to be seen!

So we all turned back, we all turned back.
We searched in every nook and in every crack.
We all turned back, we all turned back.
We forgot the baby, so we all turned back.

We found the baby, Mom began to weep.
By now everybody was half asleep.
Back in the car, Dad said:  “Tell you what we’ll do …
“Let’s go and get a movie and forget about the zoo.”

And we all turned back, we all turned back.
We served up popcorn and crackerjack.
We all turned back, we all turned back.
Too tired to see the tigers, so we all turned back!
