It’s Okay

Mom was in the kitchen,
Fixing me a snack;
I was playing with the coffee mug,
When I heard a crack.
The mug was down in pieces,
There was coffee on the floor,
And I wanted to cry for ever more.

“It’s okay, it’s okay,”
That’s what my mom would say.
“Things fall down and break apart,
It happens every day.
Everybody makes mistakes,
We’re all the same that way –
It’s okay, it’s okay.”

I was working on a tower
That was eighty stories high.
Just one more block, up at the top,
And it might reach the sky.
But suddenly it teetered,
And came crashing to the floor,
And I wanted to cry for ever more.

“It’s okay, it’s okay,”
That’s what my mom would say.
“You can try again tomorrow,
There will be another day.
And if you’re tired of blocks
We’ll find something else to play –
It’s okay, it’s okay.”

Dinner was at seven,
But the guests all came at six.
The food still wasn’t ready,
Now Mom was in a fix.
I could see her getting angry,
She was having a bad day.
I wondered, was there something I could say?

“It’s okay, it’s okay,”
That’s what I’d always say;
When Mom or Dad got grumpy
When things didn’t go their way.
I’d take them by the hand
And solemnly I’d say:
“It’s okay, it’s okay.”

It’s okay, it’s okay,
That’s what we all should say.
Though the sky looks kind of gloomy,
The sun is on its way.
Hard times will befall us,
But they’ll also go away –
It’s okay, it’s okay, it’s okay!
